I agree with Ryan in that feeling able to teach/assist others is a good measure of your understanding. Nevertheless, while teaching (or at least attempting to) I learn the most. Someone great once said "I teach so that I may learn what it is I do not know."

Thanks very much for this Gabriel, as it has formalised a criteria for me to evaluate my understanding on stuff, and allow me to take a fresh look at myself.

Great post Gabriel!

Teaching is something that I've had a bit of a problem with lately - I don't know if it's that I don't understand underlying concepts as much as I need to so I can explain them better, or if I just don't have the flair to explain concepts concisely to others.. at any rate, I know that if I can get past this area and focus more effort into learning what I need to know to explain things in a way that is easier to understand, it will bring me to that next level of understanding as well!

It's my gut feeling that if I can do a great job helping someone understand a concept or technology, then I know that I have hit the next level of learning and am that much closer to becoming an expert :)
