I feel compelled to make a minor correction. It is improper to say “the hoi polloi”. “hoi” is an English transliteration of the Greek masculine plural definite article. Therefore, when one says “the hoi polloi”, he is essentially saying “the the masses”, which seems a bit redundant at the least. Using the English definite article before the Greek definite article is a common mistake that is often employed by hoi polloi.

I almost failed to mention the mistake completely — fearing I may sound a bit too…smug?
