You sure do know what youre talking about. Man, this blog is just great! I cant wait to read more of what youve got to say. Im really happy that I came across this when I did because I was really starting to get bored with the whole blogging scene. Youve turned me around, man!

Your method-declaration-style is far from being nice! This smalltalk-style methods are having one really huge benefit: You can actually read messages like sentences and as we all should know: Code is first for reading and just secondly for the machine (because 80% of what a programmer is spending its time with is reading his code, not writing it). Learning how to writing readable and understandable method-names is the first step in learning about good software design.

Awesome blog post - this is what I was looking for when I moved from C# to Objective-C on the iPhone last March. There is still not a lot of "getting started" websites out there, but I wrote two blog posts that may interest you (one on MVC and the other on writing a complete class with source code). The site is here:

@ben

"Code Sense" ;) careful you don't get your trademarks mixed up lol.

I am still learning xcode, that's one of my biggest impediments right now really. I have a lot of invested effort getting keyboard shortcuts and usage patterns out of VS that I haven't found in xcode yet. But it's a nice IDE, especially for the price.

I'm also digging into Obj-C development, and working through the Hillegass book. It's really good.

I'm not ready to branch off & start creating iphone apps just yet, but I am starting to understand how it all works.

XCode is pretty nice, and I do feel lost at times, there are some cool things. Such as, pressing escape lists the members of the class that match what you are typing. Alt+Option+Up switches between the header & implementation files.

The intellisense is much improved after installing the iPhone SDK as well, so you get intellisense as you type rather than having to "ask" for it.

Thanks for the tip on testing. I'll need to dig into that soon.

@Scott... you're probably right, I guess I've only seen the named parameters so far. Regarding GC, it came in 2.0 and from what I've read it only works in 10.5 Leopard.

@Scott: yep... I developing on the iPhone... so I gave that for granted. For the Mac you can set it to use the garbage collector

@Sergio actually I'm pretty sure it works both ways. The example you give is named params, but you can do it without (which is what I've been doing as the named params feel clunky to me yet.)

Hi Scott, I'm also learning to crawl in ObjC and your post (and comments) already taught me a few things.
I think your example of a method ( myTypeInstanceMethodWith3ParamsFirst ) is invalid b/c the first parameter in a method is introduced by the method/message name and then there's an introduction for each parameter. You actually had 4 parameters there, but it would still be syntactically incorrect. Maybe something like:
-(void) myTypeInstanceMethodWith3ParamsFirst:(int)intParam1 withParam2:(int)intParam2 withParam3:(int)intParam3;
